Check out this podcast interview of Americhicks' (Molly Vogt and Kim Monson) guest Keith Nobles with a brief explanation of why the Indian nations are referenced in the U.S. Constitution and how over time and various court and executive decisions the treaties were broken and freedom and property were taken from the Indian nations. It is an excellent abbreviated explanation and worth listening to, especially the part where individuals were no longer allowed responsibility over their own property and affairs but required assignment of "guardians" to function for them.

After listening to the podcast, consider reading David Grann's book Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI where the guardianship becomes an incentive for serial murders of the once wealthy Osage in the early 20th century.
